Barcelona Sants is Spain’s second station and the hinge of the Mediterranean corridor — AVE to Madrid in 2.5 hours, high-speed to Lyon, Marseille and Paris — while the city builds L9/L10, its longest and most automated metro, toward 2032.
Sants, opened 1881 and high-speed since 2007, is Spain’s second-busiest station — 43 million travellers (over 28 million of them Rodalies commuter rail) — with AVE, Avlo, Ouigo and Iryo competition keeping Madrid fares honest, and TGV/AVE services north to Girona, Figueres, Perpignan, Lyon, Marseille and Paris. A €1B-class transformation of the station and Plaza de los Països Catalans is underway (43-month first phase).
Rodalies is the regional skeleton: R1 up the Maresme coast, R2 to the airport and Sitges, RG1 to Girona — the beach towns and the airport both ride it. The tram (Trambaix/Trambesòs) is being knitted into Diagonal, and the Montjuïc funicular plus FGC suburban lines cover the hills.
The mega-project is L9/L10: a driverless 47.8-km line with 52 stations across five municipalities. The airport branch (L9 Sud, 20 km) opened 2016; the TBM on the central section restarted September 2025 after a year’s repair stop, boring toward Lesseps at ~130 m/day; La Sagrera–Guinardó opens end-2027, Lesseps ~2030, full connection 2031–32. Total cost €6.27 billion; projected 113 million rides a year.
Barcelona is a rail-first city break now. The AVE makes Madrid a day trip and Girona/Figueres 40 minutes; the cross-border TGV/AVE web puts Lyon, Marseille and Paris on rails from Sants. Practical: Sants’ high-speed platforms are behind luggage screening — arrive 20 minutes early; the Rodalies R2 Nord to the airport leaves from Passeig de Gràcia, not just Sants; and T-casual ten-ride tickets cover metro, bus, tram and Rodalies zone 1, including the airport run. The 2026 caveat: summer engineering works are closing chunks of L1 and L9/L10 Nord (June–September) — check TMB before counting on a line. Watch La Sagrera: when its AVE station opens, the city gains a second high-speed gateway and the northeast districts get their hotel moment.
