Fukuoka: The City, Tracked

Japan’s fastest-growing big city has the rarest asset in urban tourism: an airport five minutes by subway from the main station — now doubled in capacity, with a second runway and a Ritz-Carlton on the skyline.

The hotel landscape

Fukuoka is Kyushu’s capital and Japan’s outlier: a major city still growing, young and adding rail while the rest of the country shrinks. Its airport sat so close to downtown that it became Japan’s busiest single-runway airport — 27.1 million passengers in FY2024, fourth nationally — until a second runway and a doubled international terminal opened in March 2025.

The visitor machine is regional: Korea, Taiwan and China feed short-haul weekend waves through Hakata Port’s cruise terminal and the international terminal, while the city’s food economy — yatai stalls, Hakata ramen, mentaiko — converts transit into overnight stays. The Ritz-Carlton opened in 2023 atop Daimyo Garden City; more top-tier supply is being pulled by the Tenjin Big Bang and Hakata waterfront rebuilds.

The Fukuoka dossier is complete — a tracker plus four urban readings: the air hub, the rail hub, the arrivals table and the money flow.
