Guangzhou's hotel economy runs on a calendar no other city has: two Canton Fair peaks a year that sell out the city, and long soft valleys in between. The result is a skyline of genuine luxury — Rosewood atop the CTF Finance Centre, Four Seasons, Park Hyatt, MO — at rates that collapse the moment the fair buses leave.
Guangzhou's top end is concentrated on the Zhujiang New Town axis: Rosewood occupies the summit of the 530-m CTF Finance Centre, Park Hyatt and Four Seasons face the Canton Tower across the river, and Mandarin Oriental anchors Taikoo Hui in Tianhe. This is among the deepest luxury benches in mainland China after Shanghai and Beijing.
The fair district has its own ecosystem: the InterContinental Exhibition Centre sits steps from the Pazhou complex, and the surrounding towers — Westin, Langham, Shangri-La — live on the Canton Fair rhythm: sold out at premium in April–May and October–November, negotiable the rest of the year.
Terminal 3's opening has created Guangzhou's third hotel geography: the airport city. With T3 now carrying all international flights and the airport targeting 120 million long-term capacity, the Huadu corridor is accumulating branded supply — the same pattern Chengdu's Tianfu and Beijing's Daxing followed.
The 2025–2026 openings wave is business-leaning: mid-to-upscale brands (Novotel-grade) near the airport and Pazhou, and serviced apartments in Tianhe for the growing project-stay segment. Ultra-luxury action has moved across the border: Capella at Galaxy Macau opened February 2026 with 95 suites — a 90-minute high-speed ride away.
Guangzhou hosted 260 million visitor trips in 2025 (+6%), and foreign entries through its borders rose 35% — the city government's own work report puts the airport among the global top ten and Guangzhou South as the national leader in high-speed-rail frequency.
The structural demand driver is trade: Guangdong is China's largest exporting province, and every sourcing cycle — fair sessions, factory visits, logistics deals — fills rooms from Pazhou to Baiyun.
The single most valuable date skill in Chinese travel: avoid Canton Fair weeks unless you're attending. From mid-April to early May and mid-October to early November, Guangzhou hotel rates double and taxis vanish; outside them, the same five-star rooms cost less than a Bangkok midscale. If you must visit during the fair, book Pazhou-adjacent and ride Line 8 — the metro moves 10 million a day and doesn't surge-price. For a first visit, Tianhe is the practical base: Taikoo Hui for food, the APM line to the tower, and Zhujiang New Town's skyline walk at night, which remains one of Asia's great free shows.
