Hanoi Port Hub — the Red River capital buys its sea legs in Hai Phong

Hanoi has no seaport: the Red River was never a harbour. Northern Vietnam’s sea trade — and its cruise passengers — go through Hai Phong, 100–150 kilometres east on the expressway.

Hai Phong: the outsourced waterfront

Hai Phong is the largest port in northern Vietnam and Hanoi’s de facto sea terminal: containers from the capital’s industrial belt clear through dry ports in Vinh Phuc and the Dinh Vu logistics zone, then move 100–150 km down the CT04 expressway to the quay. The northern cluster (Hai Phong plus Cai Lan in Quang Ninh) handles about 29% of national cargo.

The passenger side got its own hardware in 2018: the Hai Phong International Cruise Terminal at Chua Ve, built to take ships to 100,000 GT, receives the Halong Bay cruise trade — and much of the “Halong” traffic actually embarks further east at Ha Long City’s Hon Gai terminal. Either way, Hanoi is the origin city: the bays are the day trip, not the port.

What it means for travellers

Hanoi’s own waterways serve pleasure, not trade: the Red River carries no scheduled passenger boats, and the city’s lake culture is a walking culture. For travellers the practical chain is simple — Hanoi is reached by air and rail; the sea enters the itinerary only as the Ha Long/Hai Phong excursion, 2–2.5 hours by expressway shuttle. The overnight cruises on Ha Long and Lan Ha bays are the “port experience” of northern Vietnam.

THE TIO READ

Treat the bay as a cruise, not a transfer: book a one- or two-night Lan Ha or Ha Long boat from Hanoi with expressway pickup, and skip the day-dash — the bays earn their keep at sunrise, not at 14:00 with the day-trippers. If your international cruise berths at Chua Ve, Hai Phong city itself deserves two hours (the colonial quarter, Du Hang pagoda) before the shuttle west.
