Metro Manila has long been a rail network of fragments. Two projects are now joining the pieces: MRT-7, a 22.8-km elevated line from Quezon City into Bulacan, is about 83% complete with partial operations targeted for 2026 — and the Unified Grand Central Station, approved in July 2026, will put LRT-1, MRT-3, MRT-7 and the Metro Manila Subway under one roof.
MRT-7 runs 22.8 km on elevated viaduct from North Avenue in Quezon City to San Jose del Monte in Bulacan, with 14 stations. As of mid-2025 the project stood at roughly 83% complete; partial operations over the first 12 stations are targeted for late 2025 into 2026, with the Tala station following by end-2026 and the San Jose del Monte terminus in 2027.
The headline number is time: the corridor today takes two to three hours by road in peak traffic. MRT-7 cuts it to 35–40 minutes. Projected ridership starts around 300,000 a day in the first year and builds toward 800,000 — which would make it one of the busiest lines in the country from a standing start.
Approved by the ICC-CC in July 2026, the Unified Grand Central Station is the keystone: a single interchange where LRT-1, MRT-3, MRT-7 and the under-construction Metro Manila Subway meet under one roof around North Avenue. For travelers this matters more than any single line — the subway's airport-to-city axis will finally connect to the rest of the network here.
The Metro Manila Subway itself — the country's first — is advancing on its Quezon City–NAIA alignment, with the depot and early stations in progress. Together with MRT-7, the Grand Central station turns North Avenue into the functional center of Manila rail for the next decade.
For now, visitors rely on LRT-1 (the north–south spine past Intramuros and toward Parañaque), LRT-2 (east–west through the university belt) and MRT-3 (the EDSA corridor linking Makati and Ortigas). All three are crowded at peak but cheap and fast relative to road traffic; the LRT-1 Cavite extension phases have added southern reach toward the airport area.
Practical note: station names on maps and apps still lag construction reality. Verify which MRT-7 stations are actually open before planning around them, and expect phased openings rather than a single ribbon-cutting.
