The openings and rebirths that matter

Moscow’s hotel story is no longer about who is opening — it is about who the city’s hotels became. The great rebranding of 2022–2025 is complete, and the domestic majors are now building on top of it.

The Safmar constellation. Moscow’s former Marriott Grand, Marriott Royal Aurora, Marriott Tverskaya and Sheraton Palace now trade as Safmar Grand, Safmar Aurora Lux, Safmar Tverskaya and Safmar Palace — over 2,000 rooms under one domestic operator, with the Hilton Leningradskaya inside the same orbit. Standards surveys find service largely unchanged; the flags are the only thing that left.

The Carlton Moscow (ex-Ritz-Carlton). The Tverskaya flagship now runs unbranded with an explicit brief: build a Russian ultra-luxury standard, free of Marriott’s playbook — staff train abroad, the 20-meter rooftop-pool spa remains the benchmark.

Cosmos Selection Moscow Arbat (2025). The Cosmos group’s soft-brand move into the historic center — panoramic rooms over Novy Arbat, part of the chain’s push past 10,600 rooms nationally.

IDera Hotel (April 2025). 239 eco-styled rooms with kitchens by Nizhegorodskaya metro — the practical end of the pipeline, built for the domestic business and family traveler.

The residual internationals. Four Seasons, Lotte, Ararat Park Hyatt and The St. Regis Nikolskaya continue to operate — the spine of the pre-2022 luxury map that never actually closed.

The TIO Essay

Moscow is the only major city where the global hotel brands left and the luxury market kept functioning — a controlled experiment no consultant would have designed. The lesson three years in: brands are distribution, not service. The staff stayed, the standards held, and the domestic operators who inherited the flagships now top the national league table. The open question is the pipeline: occupancy slipped for the first time since 2019, and the next cycle of Moscow hotels will be built by developers who have never had to answer to a global brand’s design committee. Watch what they build — it will define what Russian luxury means.
