Munich draws 8.5 million visitors a year and 12 million+ overnight stays — and the mix is tilting transatlantic: US routes alone carried 2.1 million airport passengers in 2025, while Oktoberfest keeps delivering 6.5 million visitors in sixteen days.
Munich's visitor base reads like a map of the affluent West: the USA leads the international table, followed by Italy, the UK, Austria, Poland, France, Switzerland, Spain and the Netherlands. India appeared among the risers for the first time — a new long-haul demographic finding Bavaria.
The airport data confirms the tilt: long-haul traffic grew 8.5% in 2025 against 4.3% for European routes, with US connections the single largest long-haul block. Munich is increasingly the American gateway to the Alps — and the Alpine gateway to Germany.
Sixteen days in September–October reshape the city's arrivals curve: 6.5 million visitors in 2025 (6.7 million in 2024, a record 7.2 million in extended 2023), drinking 6.5 million liters of beer at €14.50–15.80 a Maß. Roughly one in five is from abroad — with the loudest contingents from the US, Italy, the UK and Australia.
The festival's gravity shows in the infrastructure: hotel rates peak at €415, the S-Bahn runs crush loads, and the 2025 edition absorbed even a bomb-threat closure day and still cleared €1 billion in economic activity.
The year-round pillars: the trade-fair calendar (bauma alone fills the city every three years), FC Bayern and the Allianz Arena, the museum quarter around Königsplatz, and the Christmas markets — Munich's winter season is Germany's strongest after the Oktoberfest itself.
Summer belongs to the lakes and mountains: Munich functions as the base camp for Starnberg, Tegernsee, Garmisch and Neuschwanstein — which is why July–September remains the peak tourist season and average stays run just 2.1 nights: many visitors are passing through to the Alps.
The insider's Munich calendar has three windows. Best value: July–August — locals at the lakes, hotels soft, beer gardens perfect. Best spectacle: the first Oktoberfest weekend — arrive Thursday, book the tent table months ahead through the tent hosts directly, and wear the Tracht (rentals exist; it changes how you're treated). Best-kept secret: Starkbierzeit in March — the strong-beer festival season at the brewery halls (Paulaner am Nockherberg above all), where Munich's beer culture shows its local face at a third of Oktoberfest prices and none of its crowds.
