The island airport finished its once-in-fifty-years rebuild just as demand blew through every record.
Kansai International (KIX) handled 34.10 million passengers in calendar 2025, including a record 27.53 million international — roughly 7% above its pre-pandemic 2019 high. August 2025 was the busiest month in the airport’s history: 3.17 million passengers, 2.55 million of them international. Non-Japanese international passengers passed 20 million for the first time (21.73M).
The five-year Terminal 1 renovation — the region’s biggest construction project in fifty years — held its grand opening in March 2025, timed to the Expo, and was fully completed in June 2026 with the final expansion of the international departure commercial area. Centralised immigration and security lifted international capacity from 23 to 40 million passengers a year.
Kansai is now Japan’s #2 international gateway with 24.0% of the country’s international air passengers — ahead of Haneda (21.3%) for the second consecutive year, behind only Narita (29.7%). The three-airport system (KIX, Itami, Kobe) set its own record: 54.01 million passengers in fiscal 2025.
Growth is riding South Korea and Southeast Asia — Korea alone runs 174.8 flights a week — which has more than offset a pullback in mainland China capacity. The airport keeps its operational crown too: an eighth Skytrax World’s Best Airport for Baggage Delivery award, with zero lost bags since opening.
Ground access improves next: the Naniwasuji Line, due 2031, will connect KIX-bound rail directly into Umeda — closing the last awkward gap in the airport’s city links. For now, the Nankai rapi:t to Namba and JR Haruka to Tennoji/Osaka do the work.
The practical decision: fly KIX even for Kyoto — the Haruka runs airport-to-Kyoto direct in 75 minutes, and with 40-million capacity now open, queues that defined the airport in 2019 are engineered out. What to watch: the China variable. December 2025 arrivals from China fell 45% nationally after the diplomatic rupture; Kansai’s Korea/SEA diversification absorbed the shock once, but a prolonged freeze would test the 40-million plan’s utilisation curve.
