Shenzhen Bao'an set records in every core metric in 2025: 66.48 million passengers, 2.05 million tonnes of cargo, 448,000 flights. A third runway opened in November 2025, international passengers jumped over 20% to 6.3 million — and the visa-free wave sent foreign entries past one million by July 2026, 71 days earlier than the year before.
Bao'an's 2025 was a sweep: 66.48 million passengers (+8%), 2.05 million tonnes of cargo (+9%) and 448,000 movements — all records. The single-month record fell too, at 6.02 million in October. Domestic volume of 60.1 million kept Shenzhen China's second-busiest domestic market.
International was the breakout: 6.3 million passengers (+20%+), 61 international destinations across five continents, ~900 scheduled international flights a week. Emirates arrived, Maldivian followed, and Kathmandu joined in June 2026. The third runway (opened 29 November 2025) adds the capacity the growth curve demands.
Bao'an is a cargo giant wearing a passenger airport's clothes: 2.05 million tonnes in 2025, with international and regional cargo alone over one million tonnes — only the third mainland airport past that mark. This is the physical outlet of the Shenzhen economy: drones, phones, batteries and EVs fly out of here.
For travelers the cargo heft matters in one way: it subsidizes route launches. New long-hauls (Melbourne, Mexico City up-gauged, Dubai frequencies) appear here before peer cities because freight fills the belly from day one.
Shenzhen's air hub plugs into the busiest land border system on Earth: foreign nationals crossing at Shenzhen airport port passed 1.022 million by 12 July 2026 (+32.5%), with a seven-year single-day record of 22,881 on 30 April. The airport ranks fourth among national ports by cross-border volume.
Getting there: Metro Line 11 is the airport express (from Hongling South through Futian), Line 1 reaches Airport East, and Line 20 links the World Exhibition center. Ferries from the airport pier serve Hong Kong, Macau and Zhuhai — a genuine air-sea hub.
The Shenzhen-vs-Hong Kong flight decision is now a real calculation: Bao'an's international network is deep enough (61 destinations) and cheap enough that flying SZX direct increasingly beats the HKG-plus-border-transfer ritual — especially if you're staying in Shenzhen anyway, where airport-to-Futian is 30 minutes on Line 11. When HKG still wins on schedule, take the high-speed train to West Kowloon (14 minutes from Futian) rather than the road crossings. And if you're flying out early, Bao'an's new "Easy Security Check" — first of its kind nationally — genuinely moves; use it.
