Bucharest's coach network is decentralised by design: Autogara Filaret (Doctor Constantin Istrati 1) is the FlixBus-era hub for international lines; Autogara Militari (Valea Cascadelor 3) anchors the western flow — Sofia, Istanbul, the Balkans. Express buses 783/780 still bridge the airport gap.
Bucharest never consolidated its coach station: the communist-era Autogara Filaret (1970s, south of centre) survived as the international terminal — FlixBus's marketplace partner hub — while Militari, in the western district of the same name, handles the Bulgaria/Balkans flows and much domestic traffic. The result: check your ticket carefully — 'Bucharest' can mean either, 7 km apart.
The coaches matter because the modal gap is real: with no airport metro until 2029 and intercity trains running at Romanian speeds, coaches undercut rail on Sofia (7–8h), Istanbul (overnight) and Budapest routes — the classic Balkan budget grid.
FlixBus dominates international (marketplace partners at Filaret), with Romanian operators on domestic lanes and the airport expresses (783 from Piața Victoriei, 780 from Gara de Nord) run by the city network STB. Ticketing is fully digital on FlixBus; domestic carriers still often sell at the window.
No grand rebuild is planned — investment energy goes to metro M6; the coach terminals remain functional, ageing and cheap.
Bucharest's bus web is the Balkan reality layer: while the airport sets records, coaches carry the region's price-sensitive cross-border demand — workers, students, weekend families. For the traveller: for Sofia or Istanbul on a budget, coaches from Militari/Filaret are the answer — book FlixBus online, arrive 30 minutes early, and confirm WHICH terminal your ticket names; inside the city, the 783 express beats taxis to OTP at rush hour. For the watcher: coach demand here is a leading indicator of labour mobility — watch Balkan route frequencies as Romania's economy converges; a consolidated modern terminal is conspicuously absent from the plans, and that gap will eventually need filling.
