Chengdu drew 1.32 million inbound visitors in the first half of 2026 alone — up 33.6% — with foreign arrivals at the airport up 37.9% by July. The visa-free wave is doing the work: Russia is now China's No.2 source market, and Chengdu is where the western-China itinerary begins.
Chengdu's inbound recovery is outpacing the national curve: 1.315 million inbound visitors in H1 2026 (+33.6%, against national foreign-arrival growth of ~20%), and 570,000 foreign arrivals through the airports by 31 July, up 37.9%. The city now sits fourth among China's inbound destinations after Shanghai, Beijing and Chongqing.
The structure mirrors the national map: Asian short-haul (Korea, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore) leads volume, but the European and Russian segments are growing fastest — European bookings to China rose 275% in H1 2026, with Russians accounting for over half of that volume.
Pandas remain the hook — the Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is the single most-visited attraction — but behavior data shows the stay has moved on: night cruises on the Jin River, teahouse afternoons in People's Park, Sichuan opera face-changing, bespoke tailoring and wet-market food tours now anchor itineraries. Over 60% of inbound visitors to China name "experiencing Chinese culture" as their main purpose, ahead of sightseeing.
Chengdu is also the staging city: Jiuzhaigou's valleys, the Leshan Giant Buddha, Mount Qingcheng and the Tibet overland routes all start here — and the high-speed rail to Chongqing (1 hour) makes the two-city western loop a standard product.
The visa-free architecture — 50 unilateral countries, mutual exemptions, and the 240-hour transit scheme across 65 ports — covers nearly every realistic source market Chengdu has. Russia's addition in September 2025 is the city's single biggest new lever.
Payment friction, the old complaint, is dissolving: Alipay inbound spending value rose 72.9% year on year from July 2026, WeChat Pay inbound transactions +55%, and the nationwide instant tax-refund scheme now counts 8,000+ stores.
The crowd calculus: the panda base is capacity-limited and sells out on holidays — book the morning slot days ahead, or do Dujiangyan's panda valley instead, where crowds run a fraction of the city base. Best value timing is shoulder season (March–April, late October–November): flight capacity is up, hotel rates are soft, and the teahouse culture is a year-round product. If you're combining Chengdu with Chongqing, do Chengdu second — it's the better farewell dinner.
