Chengdu Port Hub — the nearest water is the Yangtze, 300 kilometres east

Chengdu sits deep in the Sichuan Basin: no seaport, no river port — the nearest navigable water of consequence is Chongqing’s Chaotianmen Dock, three hundred kilometres down the expressway.

The Chongqing gateway

Every “Chengdu” river cruise actually boards at Chongqing: Chaotianmen Dock, where the Jialing meets the Yangtze, is the embarkation point for the classic Three Gorges run to Yichang — 648 km of the river’s most famous section. High-speed trains cover Chengdu–Chongqing in about an hour, making the transfer trivial; cruise lines sell the pair as one package.

The caveat is seasonal: from April to June the upper Yangtze runs low (2.5–3 metres at Chongqing, under 2 metres upstream), and luxury ships often transfer passengers by bus 150 km downstream to Fengdu Port — a 2–2.5-hour ride the shipping company arranges. Flood season in late August can force the same move.

A dry-port capital

Like Delhi, Chengdu trades through dry ports: its containers clear customs at the Chengdu International Railway Port in Qingbaijiang — the China–Europe freight-train hub — and surface at Shanghai, Shenzhen or Ningbo. For travellers the honest summary is simple: Chengdu’s water is the Min River for irrigation and the teahouse for everything else; the ocean is someone else’s business.

THE TIO READ

Book a Three Gorges cruise from Chengdu and you book Chongqing whether you like it or not — so plan it properly: take the 1-hour bullet train, sleep a night in Chongqing, board at Chaotianmen rested. April–June sailings carry the Fengdu bus-transfer risk; September–October is the sweet spot. And if your heart wants water in Chengdu itself, the Jin River night cruise from Hejiang Pavilion is the city’s pretty, very honest consolation.
