The arrival picture

Morocco's 2025 was historic: 19.8 million tourists (+14%), tourism revenue 124 billion dirhams ($13.5B, +19%) by November — both all-time records, with the ministry framing the 2023–2026 strategy (connectivity, diversification, renovation) as the driver. Tourism is ~7.3% of GDP. The target: 26 million by the 2030 World Cup.

Marrakech is the leisure capital of that machine: overnight stays +10% through June 2026, Menara the #2 airport at 10.2 million, and the city the default first Morocco trip — medina, Majorelle, Atlas day trips, Agafay desert nights. Royal Mansour's entry into the World's 50 Best top 15 certified the top end; search interest in five-star Marrakech runs +40% year on year.

Markets: France leads (arrivals +9% H1 2026), then the UK (+4%), Spain, Germany (+14%), Belgium (+9%), the Netherlands (+10%) and Italy (+6%); Poland (+32%) is the breakout, and North America (+15.5% nationally) grows on new air links. Moroccans residing abroad remain the quiet giant of arrivals.

The TIO Read

Marrakech is a destination with a government behind it: the 2023–2026 tourism strategy — air connectivity, product diversification, hotel renovation — is delivering exactly as designed, and the Red City captures the leisure core while Casablanca takes business. The season runs October–April (the medina in winter sun is the product); summer is for the Atlas foothills and resort pools at discount. Practically: Jemaa el-Fnaa at dusk, the Majorelle garden at opening time, a hammam before dinner — and venture past the medina: the Agafay desert camps, Ouirgane and the Ourika valley are the upgrades regulars know. The market mix is shifting east and west simultaneously — Poland +32%, North America +15.5% — while France (+9%) and Britain (+4%) compound from huge bases. For the watcher: 26 million by 2030 requires Marrakech to absorb roughly a third more visitors; the airport extension, Al Boraq and the hotel pipeline are sized for it. The binding constraints are water and summer heat — watch both.
