Bus stations
Mumbai’s long-distance buses belong to MSRTC, the 16,000-bus state machine carrying 6.7 million people a day — with the air-conditioned Shivneri to Pune as its signature service.
Mumbai runs on depots rather than one terminal: Mumbai Central (opposite the railway station) anchors the long-haul inter-state runs, Dadar East is the Shivneri heartland, Borivali serves the north-Maharashtra routes, and Parel and Kurla Nehru Nagar cover the rest. MSRTC’s service ladder climbs from Ordinary through Asiad and Shivshahi AC to the Shivneri — Volvo and Scania coaches with Wi-Fi on the flagship Dadar–Pune run every half hour.
The marquee route is Mumbai–Pune: 3–4 hours down the expressway, from budget Ordinary to Shivneri sleeper. Beyond it, the network reaches everywhere Maharashtra touches — Nashik, Aurangabad, Kolhapur, Shirdi, Goa overnight, and the Konkan coast buses through Ratnagiri that remain the only sensible way down that shoreline.
Alongside the state machine, private operators (Neeta, Orange, IntrCity) run the long overnight hauls — Goa, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Udaipur — from pickup clusters at Borivali, Andheri and Dadar rather than terminals. Booking is fully digital: redBus and the MSRTC portal both work; the Shivneri needs no advance booking off-peak, but festival weekends (Ganpati, Diwali) sell the state fleet out a week ahead.
THE TIO READ
For Pune, take the Shivneri from Dadar and do not overthink it — half-hourly, honest price, Wi-Fi that works. For Goa, the overnight private sleeper beats the state bus; book a lower berth on redBus a few days out. Mumbai Central depot is the one address to remember for inter-state runs, and Ganpati week is the one week to avoid the whole system.
