The World’s Busiest Commuter Railway

Updated: 1 October 2026 · Travel Intelligence Office

Over 8 million passengers a day on 3,000 trains across 400-plus kilometres: Mumbai’s suburban railway is arguably the busiest commuter network on Earth — and it just gained an underground metro spine under the historic core.

The suburban machine

Mumbai’s suburban railway carries almost three billion passengers annually — over 8 million daily — across Western and Central Railway corridors. Central Railway alone moved over 1,373 million passengers in FY2025-26. More than 3,000 trains a day ply the 400-plus-kilometre network.

Churchgate–Dahanu and CSMT–Kalyan are the two great axes; capacity work now separates long-distance from local services, with new electronic interlockings adding a sixth dedicated suburban line between Bandra and Borivali.

The Aqua Line: South Mumbai goes underground

Metro Line 3 — the Aqua Line — became fully operational on 9 October 2025: 33.5 kilometres entirely underground from Aarey-JVLR to Cuffe Parade, with 27 stations linking the airport, BKC, Worli and the heritage core at CSMT, Churchgate and Nariman Point.

Ridership nearly tripled to 146,000 on the first full day and 1.28 million rides were clocked in the first week. The projected demand is 1.4 million daily — a corridor built to take real load off the suburban locals.

What comes next

Lines 2A and 7 already serve the western suburbs; further corridors and the Mumbai–Ahmedabad high-speed rail project will give the metropolis a three-tier rail system: suburban locals, metro, and bullet train.

The TIO Essay

No other city moves eight million people a day on rails built for a fraction of that load. The Aqua Line is the first serious relief valve in a century — and the fact that 146,000 riders appeared on day one tells you the demand was never in doubt, only the capacity.
