The Metropolises

Stockholm: The City, Tracked

The Nordic capital on fourteen islands: Arlanda back above 24 million, a record summer of 5.2 million guest nights, the biggest metro build-out in Scandinavia — and a hotel market repricing upward. Five studies, one hub.

The hotel landscape

Stockholm enters the TIO metropolis series as the anchor of the Nordic market: a 1-million city in a 2.5-million county whose visitor economy just posted its strongest summer since measurements began in 2008 — 5.2 million guest nights June–August 2025, with international nights up 16.9%, led by the United States, Germany, Norway, the UK and Finland.

The airport recovered first: Arlanda handled 24.3 million passengers in 2025, up 6.8%, with international traffic above 2019 levels from October onward and 23 new routes added in a single year. The rail map is next: Citybanan already runs 410,000 passengers a day under the centre, and the Nya Tunnelbanan programme — 63.4 km of tunnels bored since 2019 — delivers Barkarby in 2027, Arenastaden in 2028 and Nacka–Söderort in 2030.

The hotel wave is boutique-led: Stockholm Stadshotell became Sweden’s first Relais & Châteaux in January 2025, Ruby made its Scandinavian debut with Ruby Frida, Sheraton is completing a SEK 400M rebuild, and Thon takes its first fully owned Stockholm hotel in April 2026. Sweden’s hotel market finished September 2025 with RevPAR +20.5% year-on-year — the strongest reading in Europe’s north.
