SAPTCO’s Jeddah terminal runs the western corridor of the Kingdom: Makkah in ninety minutes for SAR 15, Madinah for SAR 50, and the long haul east to Riyadh.
Jeddah’s coach traffic is defined by the holy cities: SAPTCO runs the Jeddah–Makkah shuttle for SAR 15 — the cheapest ride in the Kingdom — and Jeddah–Madinah for SAR 50, with SATRANS and private operators adding capacity on both. The Riyadh run crosses the country at around SAR 80.
The main SAPTCO terminal sits south of the centre; Haramain High Speed Railway’s Jeddah station at Sulaymaniyah takes the fast traffic to Makkah and Madinah at a premium.
The choice on the western corridor is honest: the Haramain train does Jeddah–Makkah in under an hour and Madinah in two, at several times the coach fare; SAPTCO takes longer and costs a fraction.
During Ramadan and Hajj season both modes sell out — book whichever you choose days ahead, and expect dedicated pilgrim flows at the terminals.
Take the coach to Makkah only if SAR 15 versus the Haramain fare actually matters to your budget — otherwise the train wins every time: under an hour, air-conditioned, no traffic. Where the coach earns its keep is Madinah at short notice (train seats vanish first), the late-evening slots the railway doesn’t run, and any onward town the rails skip. One discipline: in Ramadan and the weeks around Hajj, treat every departure like a flight — booked, timed, and arrived at early. The terminal area is functional, not scenic; eat before you come, keep small change for the luggage handlers, and you will be fine.
