Kuala Lumpur Port Hub — the capital keeps its ships at Port Klang

Kuala Lumpur is a landlocked capital with a serious sea life: Malaysia’s largest port, 38 kilometres southwest, has been receiving cruise ships since 1995 — over 5 million passengers and counting.

PKCT: the cruise terminal

The Port Klang Cruise Terminal at Pulau Indah — opened December 1995 as Boustead Cruise Centre, rebranded PKCT after Northport and Westports bought it in 2021 — is a five-storey facility with three berths and 14 metres of natural depth: enough for the biggest ships in the region. It marked the industry’s restart in July 2022 by welcoming Spectrum of the Seas, then Genting Dream’s homeporting.

Port Klang itself is Malaysia’s principal port — world top-12 by containers — split into Northport, Southpoint and Westports. The cruise terminal’s owners plan a wharf extension to take more calls; KL remains the prize an hour’s drive inland.

Getting between port and city

The transfer options rank simply: cruise shuttles and pre-booked cars take about an hour to the Petronas district; the KTM Komuter train from Port Klang station to KL Sentral is the cheap, traffic-proof alternative but needs a taxi hop to the terminal; Grab works both ways. On ship days the terminal runs a Cruise Day Fiesta with food trucks and Mah Meri cultural shows — arrive back early and use it.

THE TIO READ

KL from a cruise ship is a discipline call: the city is an hour away and traffic can double it. With 8+ hours, go — Petronas, Batu Caves, Jalan Alor is a full but perfect day. Under 6, stay local: Klang town’s royal quarter and bak kut teh where it was invented beat a nervous dash. Book the return transfer before you leave the ship.
