A convention centre, a motoring hotel, and a skyline that finally works

Auckland opened 2026 with the country's largest convention centre and closed 2025 with its first Hotel Indigo — the top end anchored by Park Hyatt on the water, and 4,500 hotel rooms now within walking distance of NZICC.

The NZICC effect

The New Zealand International Convention Centre — Te Tumu — opened at first light on 11 February 2026 after years of delay: NZ$750 million, 33 meeting spaces, a 2,850-seat theatre and capacity for 4,000-plus delegates in a vertically stacked building on Hobson Street. Prime Minister Luxon cut the ribbon; Six60 played the opening night.

The economics are the point: the centre is predicted to attract 33,000 international visitors and generate more than NZ$90 million in new economic activity each year. It sits within walking distance of 4,500 rooms at four-star-plus quality, and an air bridge links it directly to the SkyCity precinct — making Horizon by SkyCity, SkyCity's newest five-star (opened August 2024, with The Grill's Beef Wellington already a signature), the de facto convention hotel.

The boutique tier lands

Hotel Indigo Auckland opened in April 2025 as the brand's New Zealand debut: 225 rooms across 27 floors of a 41-storey midtown tower, designed around the city's motoring heritage — rear-view mirrors, headlamp lighting, carpets mapping Auckland's streets — with Bistro Saine, Café Etiquette and The Henry cocktail lounge below. King rooms start around NZ$309.

The established top shelf holds the harbour edge: Park Hyatt Auckland on Wynyard Quarter's water and the Hilton at the end of Princes Wharf, with Sofitel Viaduct Harbour between them. Occupancy ran 64.8% in the year to October 2025 at an average daily rate of NZ$208 — soft enough to make the five-stars bookable, tight enough that event weeks sell out.

THE TIO READ
The reviewer’s call

Our read: book around the NZICC calendar. On convention weeks, Horizon and Hotel Indigo price like the trophies they are; on the quiet weeks between, they are the best-value five-star beds in the South Pacific. For a first Auckland stay, take the water — Park Hyatt or the Hilton on the wharf — and walk to dinner at the Viaduct. Midtown is for return visits, when K Road and the new CRL station become the point.
