New Openings · Xi’an 2025–2026
A terminal larger than the airport’s other three combined, a metro that passed the London Underground, and a luxury pipeline that finally matches the visitor numbers — Xi’an’s openings are playing catch-up with its fame.
Terminal 5 opened on 20 February 2025 as the core of a ¥46.9 billion Phase III expansion: 705,500 m² in a Tang-dynasty silhouette — larger than T1, T2 and T3 combined — with 126 contact stands, a baggage system moving 12,000 pieces an hour, and the world’s first archaeological museum inside an airport, built around artifacts unearthed during construction. All international flights moved on day one.
The metro kept pace. Line 15 opened on 29 December 2025, taking the network to 13 lines and roughly 423 km — past the London Underground in length and ridership. Days later, on New Year’s Eve, the system set its first-ever 6-million day: 6.238 million rides on 31 December.
Hyatt Regency Xi’an Chanba opened in September 2025 with 310 rooms beside the International Convention and Exhibition Center — a bet on the northeast eco-district and the MICE business. Behind it comes the heaviest luxury pipeline the city has ever held: Four Seasons (~250 keys, 2026–2028), Rosewood in Qujiang (180 rooms, ~2027) and Mandarin Oriental’s first Xi’an hotel (166 rooms, 2029).
The timing is demand-led: inbound visitors grew 91.56% in 2025 and inbound spending 92.84%. When a city’s foreign arrivals nearly double in a year, the luxury flags stop being speculative and start being late.
See T5 as an attraction, not just infrastructure — arrive early enough for the museum hall. And note the geography of the new hotels: Chanba, Qujiang, the southeast — the visitor economy is decentralizing away from the Bell Tower, and room rates there are where the value sits until 2028.
