Hurghada is the engine room of Egyptian tourism: a 10.5-million-passenger airport, the Red Sea's largest resort cluster and the cheapest reliable winter sun in Europe's four-hour reach. The 2025 season set a national record (19.0M arrivals, +21%); the 2026 spring proved the market's shock-and-bounce rhythm. This brief reads the flows, the access math and the honest frictions.
Hurghada runs on chartered Europe. Germany and Russia form the backbone tier — the two markets that kept the coast alive through every crisis of the last decade. The UK is the structural riser: more than a million Britons visit Egypt yearly (Rixos Hotels Egypt), and Hurghada now has direct service from London, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Glasgow. Poland and Czechia are the fastest-growing CEE charters; Italy and France remain the traditional Red Sea base. Nationally, Europe delivers 65% of Egypt's arrivals and the Middle East 20.5% (OECD 2026) — Hurghada skews even more European than the country.
An honest caveat: Egypt publishes no official source-market split for Hurghada itself. Our tiers are a desk ranking from airport, operator and trade-press evidence — not official percentages.
HRG handled ~10.5M passengers in FY 2024/25 (+22%) — Egypt's second airport and a top-3 African gateway by traffic. Capacity has just been raised from 7.5M to 13M, and in December 2025 Egypt put HRG out to tender as the first of 11 airports in an IFC-backed private-management programme. Transfers are short: 15 minutes to the city strip, ~30 to Sahl Hasheesh, ~35 to El Gouna, ~40 to Makadi Bay.
OTA market checks (March 2026) price Hurghada city at roughly €52 for a 4-star night and €96 for a 5-star — against €89/€164 in El Gouna, €68/€128 in Makadi Bay and €74/€139 in Sahl Hasheesh. All-inclusive dominates: the quoted shelf is effectively the whole holiday. Comparable Mediterranean 5-star weeks price two to three times higher — this spread, not the reef, is Hurghada's structural moat.
Bottom line: book the shoulder months, pick the sub-zone before the hotel (city strip ≠ Makadi ≠ El Gouna), and treat the star rating as a starting bid, not a verdict. Hurghada is the Red Sea's utility player — and its record year is structural, not lucky.
