Why the Maldives matter

Fifty years of setting the luxury-tourism standard. Now — the hardest cycle in its history: a record pipeline meets fragile logistics and rising levies.

History

From 22 tourists on Velingandu in 1972 to 2.25 million in 2025. One island, one resort — a concept many copy and none replicate.

Geography

26 atolls, 1,192 islands, 187 inhabited. Every resort is its own island. No neighbours — no competition on the beach.

Luxury Tourism

ADR higher than Monaco's. No city hotels, no mass tourism. The result: occupancy everyone else dreams of.

Accessibility

Direct flights from 35 cities. Seaplane or speedboat defines the price segment. The farther from the airport — the higher the exclusivity.

Climate

Dry season: November–April. Wet season: May–October. But even the rainy season brings lower prices, empty beaches and the best surfing.

Unique Selling Points

Underwater villas, private islands, bioluminescence, mantas. The core USP is the absence of an alternative. The Maldives competes with its own former self.

True Stay Cost

T-GST 17%, service 10%, green tax $12 per guest per day, seaplane transfers $500–900 per person. The published villa rate is never the final one — add a confident 25–40%.

One-millionth visitor landed 21 June — the corridor hedge held

After the March–July YoY declines, arrivals are rising again; the million mark came ~3 weeks later than 2025. China and Russia direct capacity did the heavy lifting exactly as our Market Brief modelled.

30 Jul 2026TTW

5,899 average daily arrivals by 18 July — Russia and China ignite the rebound

Summer run-rate back near record pace. The V-shaped recovery we pencilled for Q4 is arriving a quarter early on Asian-source strength.

Three windows of the season

Value window · May–September

Wet season, discounts to 40–70% at strong resorts, best window for new openings and family villas. Manta season in Baa Atoll peaks June–November.

Shoulder · October–November

Ramps up before the festive wall: rates 20–30% below peak, seas calming, European capacity restored. The connoisseur's window.

Peak · December–April

Dry season at full price; festive dates carry 30–50% premiums and minimum stays. Book top-tier estates 9–12 months out.
