Sri Lanka

A record 2.36M arrivals in 2025 — then Cyclone Ditwah, a target cut to 2.7M, and the honest question: why does a fuller island earn less per guest?

Within it: India 531,511 (+27.5%), Russia 186,580 (third; +189% since 2018 but −20.6% y/y in Dec 2025 — the volatile layer), France and Australia both crossed 100,000, Bangladesh ~60,000 (+50.6%). China remains flat — the obvious unrealized market. The structural shift: travelers aged 60+ are now 17.5% of arrivals, up from 15% in 2018.

Three perimeters, three truths: the register (59,578 rooms, guesthouses included), the classified core (~56.7K rooms, where Jetwing, Cinnamon, Aitken Spence, Hilton and Minor concentrate 40.7%), and the informal shadow supply (~40% of the industry) that sets the island's price ceiling. The result is visible in one number: record arrivals, revenue still $1.3B below 2018.

What we are watching

Signals

The signals the desk is watching — the notes behind the Sri Lanka Market Brief.

2026TIO desk

A record year with a leaking wallet

2.36M arrivals beat 2018 — revenue didn't ($3.2B vs $4.48B). Daily spend fell to $148 from $170–180 as informal supply (~40% of the industry) repriced the island downward. Volume won; value is the fight.

2026TIO desk

The honest target cut

January 2026 aimed at 3.0M arrivals and $5B; by August the bureau cut to 2.7M/$4.2B after six y/y monthly declines. Hoteliers (Jetwing's Hiran Cooray) had said 2.6–2.7M all along — and blamed the still-missing national marketing campaign.

2026TIO desk

The free-ETA gamble

Since May 25, 2026, citizens of 40 countries (India, Russia, UK, USA, EU, China included) enter on a free 30-day ETA — a deliberate $75M fee sacrifice, extended one year to May 2027, to be judged on arrival growth.

2026TIO desk

Cyclone arithmetic

Ditwah killed over 600, damaged 91,000 homes and broke the hill-country railway (restoration ~18 months) in late November 2025 — and December still grew +4.2%. The island's shock cadence (2019, 2022, 2025) is now the base rate.
