Aqaba is Amman’s sea gate: a working Red Sea port that opened the country’s first cruise terminal in 2023, receives winter ships bound for Petra and Wadi Rum — and still runs the nightly ferry to Egypt.
The Aqaba Cruise Terminal opened in January 2023 with MSC Splendida and her two-thousand-plus guests — AD Ports Group’s first cruise terminal outside the UAE, inside the Marsa Zayed redevelopment that moved Aqaba’s industrial port south and freed the city waterfront. Ships of 1,300 to 2,400 guests now call through the October-to-April window, and the terminal’s promise is blunt: step off the gangway, and Petra is two hours north, Wadi Rum one.
Around the terminal the UAE-Jordan partnership keeps compounding — a digital ports community system, upgrades at King Hussein International Airport, and the Aqaba Special Economic Zone’s visa-free entry for most nationalities. Aqaba is being built as Jordan’s second front door, at the exact moment the Red Sea cruise winter is becoming a fixture.
The old border still runs on water: AB Maritime’s fast ferry crosses from Aqaba to Nuweiba in Egyptian Sinai in about ninety minutes for roughly $70, six days a week, with a slow car ferry for vehicles and a 10-dinar exit fee at the terminal. It remains the region’s last classic sea crossing — the backpacker bridge between Petra and Dahab.
Most visitors, though, meet the sea at the end of the loop: fly Royal Jordanian’s fifty-minute hop or take the four-hour Desert Highway, dive the reefs or float off Tala Bay, then fly home from Queen Alia. The classic itinerary — Amman, Petra, Wadi Rum, Aqaba — is the Golden Triangle, and Aqaba is its soft landing.
Aqaba will never be Dubai — and that is the pitch: a real port, a new terminal, ships that exist to deliver you to Petra by ten in the morning. If your itinerary allows, take the ferry from Sinai; the Nuweiba crossing is the last old-school sea border in the region. Either way, end the Jordan loop with a Red Sea day before the flight home.
