What the Fog City Banks

Foreign-currency tourism revenue hit $2.4 billion in 2025 — near the all-time record — while per-capita holiday spending runs lean at about ¥679: Chongqing sells volume, and is learning to sell margin.

A high-volume, thin-margin machine

The 2024 Mid-Autumn holiday is the clean x-ray: 7.765 million domestic visits generating ¥5.27 billion — ¥678.6 per capita. Chongqing’s offering is spectacular and mostly free: the skyline, the stairs, the river light. Money moves through hotpot, hotels and the metros rather than ticket gates.

The forex line tells the other story: $2.398 billion in 2025, back to within a whisper of the 2019 record ($2.52B) — with the cruise sector the premium exception, where berth occupancy at 80.6% and a retiring economy fleet push the average ticket steadily upward.

Where the next margin comes from

Watch three layers. First, cruises: new-build ships and the Chongqing–Wuhan long route are repricing the product from “selling cabins” to “selling culture”. Second, the events economy around the East station TOD and the convention clusters. Third, night-time consumption — the city’s 3 a.m. hotpot streets are a monetizable asset no other Chinese metropolis can copy.

For travelers the conclusion is pleasant: Chongqing remains one of the cheapest world-class city-breaks in Asia. The city’s strategy to change that is visible but slow — enjoy the ¥678-per-day city while it lasts.

THE TIO READ
The reviewer’s call

Spend where Chongqing is unique: a cruise cabin upgrade, a riverside hotel floor above the fog line, and hotpot in the cave restaurants. Skip the souvenir economy entirely — the city’s real products are vertical, and they’re already included in the walk.
