Twenty-Two Million Passengers, One Merged Fortress

Daniel K. Inouye International handled 21.99 million passengers in 2025 — 102.8% of its 2019 mark, flat year on year — on 314,702 operations across four runways including the offshore Reef Runway. The headline is corporate: the Alaska–Hawaiian merger made Honolulu the combined carrier’s second-largest hub, with Alaska alone now carrying 28.2% of HNL traffic and Hawaiian joining oneworld.

The merger hub

The Alaska Air Group acquisition of Hawaiian — closed September 2024 at $1.9 billion — turned HNL into the fifth-largest US airline’s second hub. The integration ledger through 2025: a unified loyalty program (Atmos Rewards, live October 2025), Hawaiian’s accession to oneworld, a fivefold-larger Hawaiian premium lounge due in the Mauka Concourse in 2027, and 21 new routes across the combined network including fresh Hawaii–mainland nonstops. The DOT approval came with conditions protecting competition at the Honolulu hub — recognition that this fortress now concentrates nearly half the market in one corporate family (Alaska 28.2% + Hawaiian 18.7% of passengers).

The route map tells the market’s structure: Los Angeles is the top corridor at 1.14 million passengers, then the neighbor-island shuttle quartet (Kahului 966,000, Lihue 715,000, Kona 688,000, Hilo 661,000) that makes HNL the state’s mandatory transfer table. Internationally, Tokyo dominates — Haneda 955,000 plus Narita 763,000 — with Seoul, Osaka, Vancouver and Sydney behind. Southwest’s interisland presence (14.1% share) keeps domestic fares honest; the soft spot is the trans-Pacific leisure yield that the weak yen keeps suppressing.

A terminal finally catches up

For decades HNL’s hardware lagged its role: the last major expansion predated the 21st century’s first decade. The Mauka Concourse — opened into service after a $340-million build, the airport’s first major terminal expansion in over 28 years — adds six gates with dual loading bridges, new TSA lanes and 23 acres of taxiway. Around it: $60 million to renovate ticketing Lobbies 5–8, the 2027 premium lounge, a planned Diamond Head Concourse build-out, an 1,800-stall garage next to the Hawaiian/Alaska terminal, and roughly half of a $1.78-billion airports capital budget going to pavement meant to outlast another half-century.

The rail link arrived the same season: Skyline’s Segment 2 opened 16 October 2025 with Lelepaua station inside the airport — the first rail connection in HNL’s history. For a hub whose passenger count is fully recovered (102.8% of 2019) but whose international mix is still half-healed, the build-out is timed to the bet that Asia returns: Haneda frequencies, Zipair’s Narita capacity and the oneworld feed are the levers that decide whether 22 million becomes 25.

THE TIO READ
The reviewer’s call

The TIO Read: HNL is recovered in volume, not in composition — 102.8% of 2019 with the high-spend Japanese visitor still missing half its cohort is an achievement built on mainland backs. The reviewer’s call: fly in through the Mauka Concourse and out past the old terminal to see both eras in one trip; use the Skyline to town only if traveling light (the walk from Lelepaua to baggage claim is honest exercise); and watch the lounge opening in 2027 — when Alaska invests fivefold in premium ground product at a hub, the trans-Pacific push is already decided.
