Rail hub · Union Station
Union Station is Canada’s busiest transportation hub — 300,000 people a day through a 1927 Beaux-Arts masterpiece — and the platform where GO Transit’s 60.8 million annual riders, VIA Rail’s national trains and the UP Express airport link all converge.
Toronto’s Union Station — opened 1927, the largest and busiest in Canada — is where the country’s passenger rail geography converges: GO Transit’s seven commuter lines, VIA Rail’s Quebec-Windsor corridor trains and the UP Express airport link all feed one concourse. GO carried 60.76 million rail passengers in 2025, and at least 91% of GO train ridership is to or from Union — the single most concentrated commuter flow in the country.
The intercity story is VIA: the Quebec-Windsor corridor — Toronto–Montreal roughly five hours, Ottawa about four and a half — is VIA’s densest and most competitive service, and the market Ottawa and Montreal already show what faster rail could do. The federal High Frequency Rail programme proposes dedicated tracks on the same spine; until it arrives, Toronto-Ottawa-Montreal rail remains the honest alternative that business travellers price against the plane.
The transit layer completes the hub: the TTC subway’s Line 1 under Front Street, the 509/510 streetcars on Queens Quay and the PATH underground city connect Union to the financial district without going outside.
The UP Express is the airport-rail case study of the decade: launched 2015 as a premium $27.50 service, it flopped; refounded in 2016 at $12.35 ($9.25 with PRESTO), ridership quadrupled to 4.5 million a year, and it now runs every 15 minutes around the clock with about 80% air travellers on board. A fifth station at Mount Dennis opened in November 2025, tying the airport line into the Eglinton Crosstown corridor.
The TIO read: Toronto’s rail hub is the strongest air-rail integration in North America — 28 minutes airport-to-downtown on a flat fare is the number that protects the city’s hotel market from Toronto’s notorious highway congestion. Watch UP Express frequency in the 2026 FIFA summer: if it holds 15-minute headways through tournament peaks, the model has passed its stress test.
Union Station is the asset that makes Toronto investable: a 1927 concourse moving 300,000 people a day, feeding a market where 6.85 million hotel nights sell a year. The UP Express fare lesson — halve the price, quadruple the riders — is the single most transferable insight in this study. Watch High Frequency Rail funding decisions in Ottawa: dedicated Toronto–Montreal tracks would be the continent’s most consequential rail project of the decade.
