33.99 million passengers in 2025 — a record, +33% above 2019, the best rebound of any major European airport. Athens’ airport is no longer a holiday gateway; it is a top-tier European hub.
Athens International closed 2025 with 33.99 million passengers (+6.7%), its best year ever and 33% above pre-pandemic 2019 — the strongest recovery of any European capital airport. 73% of traffic is international; international passengers grew 8.6% while domestic grew just 2.2%.
The off-season now grows fastest: the five weakest months (January–March, November–December) averaged ~10% growth, double the summer pace — direct evidence of the year-round city-break shift. January 2026 continued at +8.6%.
The airport serves 164 destination cities in 55 countries with 70 airlines. Italy is the top international market; the USA became the second-largest O&D market with 2 million round-trip passengers for the first time (+12%). Long-haul traffic to North America, Canada, China and Singapore grew +15.1%.
Foreign-resident arrivals — the purest inbound-tourism measure — reached 8.72 million one-way passengers, +10%. ACI EUROPE named Athens the Best Airport 2025 in the 25–40 million category and ranked its connectivity second among European mega hubs.
Athens is the rare airport where demand leads supply: load factor held at 81% even as seats grew 7%. The January 2026 radio-interference blackout that diverted hundreds of flights was a warning, not a trend — a €300 million upgrade is already underway. TIO’s read: the airport’s real bottleneck is physical capacity; watch the expansion debate as closely as the traffic numbers, because slots in 2027 will be the city’s binding constraint.
