The cruise port ten minutes from the runway doubles in five years

Flynn Cruiseport closed 2025 with 22 cruise brands and more than 455,000 passengers — against 389,000 in 2018 — and answered with a $100 million rebuild: shore power at both main berths, a second boarding bridge, and Boston's biggest-ever homeport ship arriving for 2026.

The Canada–New England gateway

Boston's cruise season is built on geography: the port is the natural gateway for the Canada–New England run — Bar Harbor, Halifax, Québec — and it is the region's turnaround port of choice. The 2024 season set the bar with a record 480,000 passengers on 167 ships; 2025 held near that level while adding a record ten homeport vessels, and the calendar runs April to November with Bermuda, Iceland and repositioning itineraries filling the edges.

The scale is compounding: economic impact hit $256 million — up 90% since 2018 — supporting more than 3,000 jobs. Holland America sources its cod, haddock and lobster from Boston's own John Nagle & Co.; peak fall weekends now run three-ship days moving 10,000 passengers through the Seaport.

The $100 million answer

Massport's response to growth is the port's biggest investment since the Black Falcon terminal opened in 1986: $100 million, anchored by $60 million of shore power at the two main berths — letting the nearly 80% of calling ships that can plug in switch off their diesels by 2029. The pier gets structural upgrades, a second passenger boarding bridge, a new escalator and an expanded, re-seated queue hall.

The ships are growing to meet it: for 2026 Norwegian Cruise Line moved the 4,500-guest Norwegian Breakaway onto the Boston homeport run — the largest vessel ever based at the port, replacing the 3,200-guest Gem. The terminal's own superpower is unchanged: no major cruise port in North America sits closer to its airport, ten minutes by tunnel.

THE TIO READ
The reviewer’s call

Our read: Boston is the smartest embarkation in the East — fly in the morning of a Bermuda sailing, SL1 to South Station, and you're aboard before the Florida ports have cleared their first security line. For the Canada–New England run, book the northbound leg out of Boston in late September: peak foliage sails right past the hull. And sleep pre-cruise in the Seaport — the Homewood/Hampton complex is fifty steps from the terminal — because the only bad Boston cruise morning is the one spent in tunnel traffic.
