The Doha Metro logged more than 66 million trips in 2025 — among the world's fastest driverless systems at 100 km/h — with three lines, 37 stations, 2-riyal fares and a tournament-proven ability to move a stadium crowd in an hour.
Opened in 2019 — the year before it was needed most — the Doha Metro radiates from Msheireb, the largest station, where all three lines meet. The Red Line is the visitor's line: 40 kilometers from Lusail through West Bay, the Corniche and Msheireb to the airport's Terminal 1 and on to Al Wakra. The Green Line serves Education City and the National Library; the Gold Line links the National Museum, Souq Waqif and Sport City.
The system is engineered to Gulf specifications: fully driverless GoA4 operation at up to 100 km/h — among the fastest in the world — trains every six minutes, air-conditioned walkways and station architecture that won design awards in its own right. During the Arab Cup 2025 the metro moved 4.7 million passengers across eighteen days, peaking at 315,000 a day, with five of six stadiums a walk from a station — the World Cup playbook, still working.
Qatar Rail solves the Gulf's great transit problem — the first and last mile in 45-degree heat — two ways: free Metrolink feeder buses in a 2-to-5-kilometer radius of stations, and Metroexpress, a complimentary Mercedes-van ride-share tied to your metro journey across ten stations. The Lusail Tram adds 19 kilometers of lines through the new city north of the Corniche, interchanging with the Red Line at Legtaifiya and Lusail QNB — the busiest station on the network during tournaments.
Fares are deliberately trivial: 2 riyals standard, 10 for Goldclub class, with a rechargeable card costing 10 riyals; children under five ride free. Practicalities: trains run Saturday-to-Thursday 5 a.m. to 1:30 a.m., Fridays from 2 p.m.; Friday mornings belong to the taxi apps. The Blue Line to a future airport Terminal 2 is planned — the network is designed to roughly double.
Our read: the Red Line is the single best visitor deal in the Gulf — airport to West Bay in 20 minutes for two riyals, in a train that looks like the future. Stay within a ten-minute walk of a Red or Gold Line station and Doha becomes a no-car city: souq, museums, Corniche, Katara and the Pearl (via Legtaifiya) all covered. Buy the card at the airport station machine on arrival, top up in the app, and use Metroexpress for the West Bay hotel blocks — it is the feature every hot-climate metro should copy.
