Perth's visitor transport runs on giveaways: colour-coded CAT buses that never charge a fare, a Free Transit Zone across the CBD, the whole network free on Sundays — and a ten-minute Swan River ferry to South Perth priced like a bus ride.
The CAT system is the gift: Blue CAT runs Perth Busport to Kings Park past Elizabeth Quay, Red and Yellow cross east–west, Purple reaches UWA through Kings Park, and Green serves Leederville on weekdays — all free, no card needed, every day of the year except three. On top sits the Free Transit Zone: any bus journey that starts and ends inside the CBD grid costs nothing, trains included if you tag on and off within the zone.
Two more freebies matter to visitors: every Sunday the entire Transperth network — bus, train and ferry — is free with a SmartRider or any contactless card, and the Surf CAT shuttles free every ten minutes between Stirling station and Scarborough Beach. The result: a tourist can spend a full Perth weekend without buying a single ticket.
The Transperth ferry crosses the Swan from Elizabeth Quay to Mends Street, South Perth, in about ten minutes — zoo, foreshore and the skyline photo back — integrated into the same fares as the buses. It is the cheapest river cruise in the country.
Rottnest is the serious water run: three operators — Rottnest Express, SeaLink and Rottnest Fast Ferries — sail from B Shed and Northport in Fremantle (25–30 minutes), Barrack Street Jetty in the city (about 90) and Hillarys Boat Harbour (45). Same-day returns from Fremantle start around A$64–89 including the A$21.50 island admission; book ahead from December to February, and take the 7 a.m. weekday departure when kids ride free.
Our read: land on a Sunday — the whole network is free, so your first ride in costs nothing — and make the Blue CAT your orientation tour before you do anything else. For Rottnest, leave from Fremantle, not Barrack Street: half the time, two-thirds the price, and Freo earns the return leg. The Elizabeth Quay ferry at golden hour, skyline behind you, is the best A$2.60 photograph in Australia.
