São Paulo: The City, Tracked

The largest city in the Americas is having its best year in a decade: Latin America’s busiest airport again, the region’s biggest rail PPP opening, a record port down the hill, and a hotel market that just printed its first R$1,000 month. Eight pages on Brazil’s economic engine — where a fifth of the country’s GDP, three airports and eleven million bus passengers a year converge.

Why São Paulo, why now

Scale first. São Paulo’s metro area holds 20+ million people and moves them through a three-airport system that handled roughly 84 million passengers in 2025 — Guarulhos reclaimed the continental crown with a record 47.19 million, Congonhas held Brazil’s #2 slot at 24 million domestic, and Viracopos set its own record at 12.8 million. Brazil’s tourism year was the strongest since records began in 1970: 9.29 million international arrivals, +37.1%, and São Paulo state was the front door with 2.75 million of them.

Then the build-out. Acciona opened the first stretch of metro Line 6-Orange in June 2026 — Latin America’s largest PPP — while the Comporte–CRRC consortium began laying the 101-km Campinas express, Brazil’s fastest train at 140 km/h, under a R$17 billion program inside the state’s R$194 billion SP on Rail cascade. Down the escarpment, the Port of Santos posted an all-time record 186.4 million tonnes and 5.9 million TEU, carrying 29.6% of national trade. At Tietê, the hemisphere’s largest bus terminal moved its 11 million passengers a year, as it has since 1982.

And the repricing. November 2025 made São Paulo the first Brazilian market with hotel ADR above R$1,000, on the strongest occupancy since 2011 — powered by an events algorithm of Formula 1, Carnival, the NFL and the congress circuit. The W opened, a Westin followed, Marriott pledged 98 hotels, and Brazil’s pipeline grew 25% to 133 projects. This series tracks the hemisphere’s most consequential urban economy page by page, as the data publishes.
