Zurich’s other network floats: steamers, e-boats and the long run to Rapperswil

Zurich has no seaport — it has something better. The ZSG has run Lake Zurich since 1889 with a 17-vessel fleet, two working paddle steamers among them, and since 2023 silent electric boats thread the Limmat under the guild-house bridges.

The lake is the boulevard

('From Bürkliplatz the ZSG runs year-round services down the 42-kilometre lake: short loops to Zürichhorn, two-and-a-half-hour runs to Stäfa, and the four-hour grand tour to Rapperswil, the medieval town of roses at the far shore. In summer the departures go hourly; the Swiss Travel Pass and GA cover them all.', 'The fleet is half the experience: paddle steamers Stadt Zürich (1909) and Stadt Rapperswil (1914) still work scheduled services, their engine rooms open to view, while the flagship MS Helvetia carries 1,200. Dinner, fondue and brunch cruises fill the calendar between them.')

The Limmat, electrified

('Since April 2023, three electric boats — Fluvius, Navalis and Pontus — run from the Landesmuseum pier beside the Hauptbahnhof down the Limmat to the lake: a fifty-minute round trip under seven low bridges, past the Grossmünster, Fraumünster and the guild houses, with a glass roof and air conditioning.', 'It costs less than a coffee on Bahnhofstrasse and doubles as public transport — the boats are inside the ZVV tariff. On clear autumn days the Rapperswil run frames the Glarus Alps so sharply that locals ride it for the view alone.')

THE TIO READ
The reviewer’s call

Skip the sightseeing bus; Zurich is read best from the water. Take the Limmat e-boat on arrival day for orientation, then give one full morning to the Rapperswil steamer — coffee on deck, lunch in the castle town, S-Bahn back in under the hour. It is the cheapest luxury the city sells.
