A country file is where a nation's two ledgers meet on one page: what the world spends inside France and what France spends outside. In 2025 France was, again, the world's most visited country — 102 million international visitors (Atout France estimate) and a record €77.5 billion in international receipts, +9% (Banque de France), a €20.1 billion tourism surplus. In the same year its own residents made 38.0 million visits abroad and spent €57.4 billion, +4%. Both ledgers below, each figure on its own perimeter — and everything TIO publishes on the country, linked.

The Read. France is the rare country that is simultaneously a top inbound machine and a top-four outbound market: a €20.1bn surplus on one side, a €57.4bn debit on the other. The 2025 inbound ledger beat the outbound one on growth (+9% vs +4%) — France sold itself better than it bought abroad. The 2026 split continues: inbound air bookings from Mexico +19%, China +17%, Canada +7% (DGE) against an outbound booking pulse that is two-speed and long-haul-weak.

The domestic third ledger. France is also the French people's favourite destination: 835 million resident nights in France in 2025 (53% of all tourist nights), half of them in the four southern regions (INSEE/Atout France). Inbound records and outbound growth happen on top of a domestic market that never empties.

02 — The 2026 inbound mirror

The widely quoted Q1 2026 air-booking prints belong here, on the inbound side — bookings by these markets into France, three-month horizon, year on year (DGE/Atout France review):

Mexico → France+19%
China → France+17%
Canada → France+7%
Spain → France+8%

Forward occupancy for the 2025/26 season ran +1.3 points across accommodation types. The 2025 inbound mix: Europeans led nights (+5%, Germany notably +9%), North Americans rose >10%, Asia rebounded with Japan outpacing China. None of this describes the French traveller — for that ledger, read the outbound dossier.
