A country file is where a nation's two ledgers meet on one page: what the world spends inside Spain and what Spain spends outside. Spain runs Europe's richest inbound machine: 96.8 million international tourists in 2025, +3.2%, spending a record €134.7 billion, +6.8% — a tourism surplus of €70.5 billion, 4.3% of GDP. Its own residents made 175.7 million trips, −4.7%, and sent €23.6 billion abroad at €131 per traveller-day — the smallest relative outbound ledger of the big four. Both ledgers below, each figure on its own perimeter — and everything TIO publishes on the country, linked.

The Read. No country in the series monetises visitors better: receipts grew faster than arrivals (+6.8% vs +3.2%), December's per-day spend hit €167, and the UK alone left €23.65bn — more than Spain's entire outbound debit. The Spanish traveller goes abroad more often every year (a record 12% of trips) but spends modestly per day; the asymmetry — selling dear, buying cheap — is the strongest in Europe.

The domestic third ledger. Most of the 175.7M resident trips never cross a border — Spain is the Spaniards' own first destination. The outbound euro is one in eight of the trip wallet; the inbound euro arrives at €1,514 per tourist. That ratio is the country's tourism business model in one line.

02 — The inbound mirror: the 2025 source podium

Who paid for the record — the three source markets that matter, with their cheques (INE, 2025):

United Kingdom → Spain · 19.0M€23.65bn
Germany → Spain · 12.0M€15.83bn
France → Spain · 12.7M€11.61bn
December spend per day€167

The UK grew arrivals (+3.7%) and outspent everyone (+4.9% to €23.65bn); Germany was flat in volume (+0.6%) but is the second cheque at €15.83bn; France slipped 1.0% to 12.7M. Regionally the flow concentrates: Catalonia took 20.0M visitors, the Balearics 15.7M and the Canaries 15.7M — island capacity, not mainland cities, absorbed the marginal tourist of 2025.
