Spain Outbound 2026: the creditor steps out

TIO Signals · Outbound Dossier · Issue 04 · October 2026 · 11-minute read

Spain is the series' mirror image: Europe's most tourism-rich creditor, running a €70.5 billion tourism surplus — 4.3% of GDP on record inbound receipts of €105.2 billion (+6.9%). Its own residents made 175.7 million trips in 2025, 4.7% fewer than in 2024, while total trip spending rose 2.6% — fewer trips, dearer trips, the series signature. Trips abroad took €23.6 billion of that wallet at €131 per traveller-day (INE), with European destinations in front and a record 12% share of trips going abroad. Below: the core measures, the destination map, the ACAVE 2026 pulse, the record gateways — and the evidence ladder that keeps every figure on its own perimeter.

The Verdict. Spain's outbound ledger is the smallest of the big four in relative terms — one euro in eight of the trip wallet leaves the country — but it is growing exactly where the market is richest: trips fell 4.7% in 2025 while spend rose 2.6%, and trips abroad took 22.8% of the nights but 36.9% of the money. The 2026 pulse is the strongest in the series: nine agencies in ten expect bookings up ~5%, long-haul leads demand, and Asia is the growth frontier (Japan, China, Indonesia, Thailand). For a Mediterranean resort the Spanish guest is a late-booking shoulder market; for Asian luxury, Spain in 2026 is the rare European source market still accelerating.

01 — Core market measures

Five numbers define the market. Each sits on its own perimeter — do not blend them.

Total trip spending+2.6% YoYSame survey; fewer trips, dearer trips

Share of trips going abroad≈12% record2024 share, the maximum of the series (Estrategia España Turismo 2030, INE data)

Two spend perimeters, both true. The INE survey counts what residents say they spent on trips abroad (€23.6bn, leisure-weighted). The balance of payments counts all cross-border travel payments — implied at ≈€34bn* on the rolling year to October 2025 — including business travel and items a survey under-reports. They are different instruments, not a contradiction; this dossier uses each only on its own rung of the ladder.

02 — Where Spanish residents travel

A Europe-first market with a record taste for abroad. The anchors, each on its own published perimeter:

Spain's abroad is close and familiar: France next door, Italy across the water, the UK for the city break, Morocco across the strait. What changed in 2025 is not the map but the wallet: the foreign trip now carries 1.6× its weight in spending relative to nights.

03 — The 2026 pulse

Booking signals, not realized arrivals. The ACAVE survey covers 450 member agencies with more than 1,000 points of sale — the organized trade, not the market.

Agencies expecting 2026 bookings ≈+5%~90%
Expecting +10–15%8%
Fastest-growing demandAsia
Q2 2026 resident trips (INE)+1.1%

ACAVE's January reading, presented at FITUR, makes long-haul the most demanded segment, with Asia the growth continent — Japan, China, Indonesia, Thailand — and luxury, senior and family travel named as rising segments. By June the trade was reporting a summer campaign dominated by last-minute bookings and a more diversified demand. The official series confirms the direction: Q2 2026 resident trips rose 1.1% with spending up 3.5% (INE). The named risks are the same ones the whole series watches: geopolitics, fuel, air fares.

04 — Air corridors and gateways

Throughput is an aviation measure — all nationalities, including connecting traffic — not a count of Spanish tourists. It still tells you where the seats are.

Gateways — 2025 throughput (Aena)

A record national network: 321.6M passengers, +3.9%, records at 23 airports. Madrid-Barajas 68.2M (+3%; international 51.4M, +5.5%) — the long-haul and Latin America hub · Barcelona-El Prat 57.5M (+4.4%; international 43.3M, +6.2%) · Palma 33.8M · Málaga 26.7M (+7.4%) · Alicante 19.9M (+8.5%) · Valencia 11.8M (+9.6%).

Corridor reads

Barajas is Spain's intercontinental instrument: three-quarters of its 2025 traffic was international, and Latin America is its structural franchise — the natural pipe for Spanish long-haul outbound. El Prat's growth concentrates in off-peak slots and the winter months, per Aena: deseasonalisation is the only capacity the airport has left until expansion.

Gateway mix matters for luxury: the premium Spanish outbound seat sells through Barajas long-haul and El Prat European; the sun airports (Palma, Málaga, Alicante) run inbound-first economics, which is why Spanish residents' beach abroad is more often flown from Madrid or Barcelona than from the coast.

05 — What it means for luxury hospitality

Four operating rules for anyone selling to the Spanish guest:

The Spanish guest of 2026: fewer trips, a richer foreign break, a later booking — and a rare European appetite for long-haul Asia. The creditor is stepping out, and he is stepping out further than before.

06 — The evidence ladder

Every figure in this dossier, on its own rung. The ladder is part of the product.
