Canada Outbound 2026: the pivot away from America

TIO Signals · Outbound Dossier · October 2026 · 9-minute read

Canada has executed the largest peacetime redirection of a top-10 source market we track. Q3 2025: trips including a US visit fell 34.7% year over year, while trips including an overseas visit rose 7.1% — and the money followed: $6.9bn overseas at a $2,094 average. This is not substitution; it is reallocation. Below: the ledger, the destination matrix, and what the pivot is worth to a resort that prices in CAD.

The Verdict. Canadians did not stop travelling — they stopped driving south. The US corridor lost a third of its visits in a single quarter while overseas trips grew, and the average overseas cheque ($2,094 · 13.5 nights) is nearly double the US overnight one ($1,098 · 5.3 nights). The destination set absorbing the pivot: Mexico first, then France, Japan and Spain. The Caribbean cools on price, not politics. Watch Q4: the October border series (US returns −26.3%, overseas air +9.6%) says the pattern held into autumn.

Destination detail publishes quarterly with a lag; Q2 2025 is the freshest full matrix. Directional read for 2026: Europe and Japan absorb what the US corridor gives up — the Caribbean shares it back on price.

03What the pivot is worth

The corridor that built the modern Caribbean and Florida resort map is being re-negotiated in real time. For destinations, the Canadian file in 2026 is a pricing story: the overseas traveller spends $2,094 per trip against $1,098 on a US overnight. Chase the pivot, not the volume — and quote in CAD.
