$1.25 to the airport: the bus city that finally connected its hubs

Houston's visitor transit snapped into focus in 2025: the 500 IAH Downtown Direct runs nonstop from Terminal E to the convention center for $4.50, the 102 still does it for $1.25, and the Red Line ties downtown to the museums and the stadium for the price of a gumball.

The airport question, answered twice

The 500 IAH Downtown Direct is the answer for anyone with a suitcase: nonstop coaches with Wi-Fi and luggage racks every 30 minutes from Terminal E to the George R. Brown Convention Center, stopping at Discovery Green, Daikin Park and the stadium district — $4.50, 7 days a week. It was built for the World Cup and stayed as the permanent layer.

The 102 is the answer for everyone else: the city bus that has run IAH to downtown for decades, $1.25 cash or card, every 15 minutes on weekdays, stopping at the Downtown Transit Center where the Red Line waits. Paying is tap-simple — contactless bank card, Apple Pay or the RideMETRO app — and transfers within three hours are free on any of them.

Buses beyond the airports

Intercity coaches cluster around the downtown transit district: Greyhound and FlixBus run the Texas triangle — Dallas in 3.5 hours, Austin in 3, San Antonio in 3.5 — from the main station southeast of downtown, while Mexican carriers like Turimex and Tornado connect Houston's giant Latino market to Monterrey and beyond. Megabus and RedCoach cover the college towns.

The honest frame: Houston rewards the hybrid traveler. Use METRO's day pass for the downtown–museum–stadium triangle, where it genuinely excels, and accept that Space Center Houston, the Heights and Galveston are rideshare or rental territory. Even the locals' rule is transit to the game, car to the coast.

THE TIO READ
The reviewer’s call

Our read: land at IAH, skip the rental counter, take the 500 — it was built for exactly you — and buy the $3 day pass on day two for the museums and the stadium. Save the car for one planned day: Space Center Houston in the morning, Kemah Boardwalk at sunset, back before traffic. Houston is two cities — a transit-friendly core and a freeway sprawl — and the travelers who enjoy it are the ones who never confuse the two.
