Port Houston closed its best year ever in 2025 — a record 4.3 million TEU and 54.5 million tons across the nation's largest waterborne tonnage gateway — while 45 minutes down I-45, Galveston opened a $156 million MSC terminal pushing toward four million cruise passengers a year.
The Houston Ship Channel is 52 miles of working water — eight public terminals and more than 200 private ones — and by tonnage it is the biggest port complex in America: crude, petrochemicals, plastics and resin move out; steel and consumer goods move in. Port Houston's 2025 was a record on both headline measures, driven by loaded exports up 7% — Houston is the world's top export gateway for liquefied petroleum gases.
The hardware keeps pace: Wharf 7 at Bayport added 1,000 feet of berth and 500,000 TEU of capacity, a 16-crane order is completing a fleet of 163 RTGs with automation lifting productivity 20%, and $2.1 billion in landside investment is programmed for the next five years. The visitor-facing corner of all this is the free M/V Sam Houston boat tour of the channel — a 90-minute front-row seat to the industrial machine, reservations required.
Houston's cruise business lives 50 miles south, on the island: the Port of Galveston is the fourth-most-popular cruise homeport in America, with four terminals, six cruise lines and nearly four million passenger movements a year. November 2025 opened its biggest chapter yet — a $156 million MSC Cruises terminal at Pier 16, the line's fourth U.S. homeport, expected to push the port toward two million MSC guests alone.
The itinerary is Gulf-classic: week-long Western Caribbean loops to Cozumel, Roatán, Belize and Costa Maya on Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Princess, Disney and MSC. The transfer reality: IAH is 71 miles from the pier, Hobby 41 — fly into Hobby if you can, book the cruise line's coach or a shared shuttle from $40, and give Galveston itself a night: the Strand, the Victorian houses and the island's seafood are the embarkation bonus.
Our read: treat Houston's port and Galveston's as one system seen from two doors. Take the free Sam Houston channel tour early in the trip — it reframes everything you'll see afterward — and for a cruise, arrive a day early, sleep on the island and board rested: the I-45 drive on embarkation morning is the single biggest avoidable risk in Gulf cruising. Book the new MSC terminal's sailings while introductory pricing lasts; new hardware always prices soft in year one.
