Where the Money Goes

The accommodation economy

Accommodation revenue reached €1.254B in January–November 2025 (+4%); the full year is expected to exceed €1.4B for the first time. The city counts about 450 hotels with 84,600 beds, 60% in four- and five-star categories, and 26 luxury properties at end-2025.

The congress dividend

Congress business contributed €1.7B to Vienna’s GDP — 59% of it directly from congresses, with €828M attributable to international events — and generated €348M in taxes. The “Optimum Tourism” strategy explicitly manages this balance: fewer bednights at higher value.

High-yield guests

The USA is the No. 1 market for five-star hotel revenue, and the 83% international mix underwrites rate strength across the upscale bands: culture is the product, and the city prices it accordingly.

THE TIO READ

Vienna is the clearest proof in our series that volume and yield are not enemies: 20M bednights and rising rates in the same year. The congress euro is the mechanism — midweek, shoulder-season, high-spend. Watch the “Optimum Tourism” KPIs rather than raw arrivals: Vienna has already chosen quality over counters, and the 2025 numbers say the bet is working.
